The John Muir Trust is looking for an experienced Head of Land Management to lead the management of 24,000 hectares across some of Scotland’s most spectacular wild landscapes.
This is a senior role combining conservation, practical land management, leadership and community engagement, with responsibility for properties including Sandwood, Quinag, Skye, Knoydart, Nevis, Schiehallion and Glenlude.
The John Muir Trust exists to conserve, protect and repair wild places for the benefit of everyone.
The Trust is looking for an experienced land management professional who shares that purpose and can lead the practical delivery of its land management programme across Scotland.
Reporting to the Director of Wild Places, the successful candidate will lead staff and contractors responsible for around 24,000 hectares of land.
The Role
Lead and develop the Trust’s Land Management team.
Oversee practical land management across the Trust’s properties.
Manage programmes covering deer management and livestock pressure.
Oversee the control of invasive non-native species.
Support path maintenance and management.
Lead the Trust’s responsibilities as a progressive crofting landlord.
Manage contractors, consultants and specialist advisers.
Oversee budgets and resources.
Ensure projects are delivered safely, on time and to agreed standards.
Balance conservation objectives with operational, financial and legal requirements.
Work with local communities on land management issues.
Support high quality visitor experiences across Trust properties.
Develop and promote best practice in the management of wild places.
Drive innovation and continuous improvement.
What We Are Looking For
The successful candidate will have significant career experience managing large areas of land for conservation.
You should combine strong practical land management knowledge with leadership, people management and budget management experience.
The role requires someone capable of leading multidisciplinary teams, managing complex projects and representing the John Muir Trust professionally and with authority.
A genuine commitment to conserving and restoring Scotland’s wild places will be central to the role.
What Is On Offer
Permanent full time position.
35 hours per week.
Competitive Band D salary based on experience.
Hybrid working.
Home working, with Inverness or North Scotland preferred.
Work across John Muir Trust sites and offices.
34 days holiday per year.
Two additional Wild Days or two sustainable travel days.
