Scottish Sea Farms is looking for an Environmental Officer, Field Scientist to join its Sustainability and Development team at Barcaldine, near Oban.
The role would suit an early career environmental professional or someone with relevant transferable experience who wants a combination of practical fieldwork and office based environmental work.
The Role
Support environmental compliance and monitoring across marine farming operations.
Undertake environmental surveys and collect environmental data.
Analyse data and contribute to environmental assessments.
Support environmental licensing activities.
Work with colleagues, regulators and external stakeholders.
Help provide clear, evidence based recommendations from environmental data.
Contribute to regulatory compliance and the sustainable development of the business.
Working Pattern
The role combines office based work with practical fieldwork and time on site.
The position is based at Barcaldine, near Oban.
What We Are Looking For
Essential
A degree in Marine Biology, Marine Ecology, Environmental Science, Environmental Management or a related discipline, or equivalent knowledge gained through relevant experience.
Some practical experience of marine environmental surveys gained through academic study, fieldwork or employment.
Good attention to detail.
Good written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively across different teams.
Ability to evaluate environmental data and provide clear, evidence based recommendations.
Ability to adapt to changing operational priorities.
Legal right to work in the UK.
Not Essential
Experience using GIS and spatial data analysis would be advantageous.
Experience in aquaculture, marine consultancy, environmental regulation or a comparable industry would be advantageous.
Understanding of aquaculture consenting processes and SEPA’s finfish farm regulatory framework and environmental monitoring requirements would be advantageous.
Knowledge of benthic ecology, including interpreting visual seabed survey reports and benthic monitoring results, would be advantageous.
Experience processing, quality checking and validating hydrographic datasets would be advantageous.
Training will be provided where requirements are not met.
